The wired USB models work plug-and-play: the computer recognizes them as a keyboard, so no software installation is required. 1D (laser or CCD) scanners read traditional linear barcodes on products. A 2D barcode scanner, in addition, reads QR codes and Data Matrix codes, even from phone screens, which comes in handy for coupons, tickets, and package labels.
